Questions and Answers

Safety Questions:

Q: How do I dispose of dangerous chemicals?

A: To dispose of chemicals check with the Department of Public Works.

Q: What if I cannot tell the rescue crew what medications I am taking when they get here?

A: Keep a medicine bottle in your refrigerator with a list of your medications, the doses and how many times a day you take them.  An emergency person will always look there for your information.

Q: Why can't I have a choice of which hospital I will be taken to?

A: As a rule we transport to the closest hospital (usually, Our Lady of Fatima).  This is not only advantageous to the patient in getting fast treatment, but we must also minimize the transport time so we can get back to covering Harmony. The next emergency may be seconds away and minutes can be critical. We are lucky that we have so many very good hospitals here in RI. After the patient has been stabilized and cared for they may be able to arrange transport to the hospital of their choice.

Tax Questions:

Q: What is the fire tax?

A: The Harmony fire tax rate for 2008-09 is $1.20 per $1,000 of the Town of Glocester property tax evaluation.

Q: Why is there a fire tax?

A: The Town of Glocester does not subsidize the HFD in any way. The running of the station is fully funded by the fire tax, various grants and donations.

Q: How is the money from the fire tax spent?

A: Income from taxes maintains all aspects of the HFD, including equipment.

Q: How is the amount of fire tax determined for each property owner?

A: The tax is a percentage of the evaluation of each property, as determined by the Town of Glocester tax roll.

Q: When are tax bills mailed each year?

A: Tax bills are mailed by July 1st, and are due and payable within 30 days.

Q: How can taxes be paid?

A: Checks can be mailed to the HFD, PO Box 360, Harmony, RI  02829.  They may also be paid directly at the HFD, 8:30 am - 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Other Questions:

Q: When does the HFD Board meet?

A: The Harmony Fire District annual meeting is held on the first Saturday of June every year. Monthly meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month at 7:00pm.  (With the exceptions being the months of July, August and December, when there is no meeting held.)

Q: Where can I get a copy of the By-Laws?

A: The Harmony Fire District By-Laws and Incorporation Act are available at the Fire Station.
